2011 ~This wine is really coming into its own. A pronounced nose of ripe raspberry with freshly cut grass, violet, toast, leather and vanilla notes. The aromas show on the palate as well (tart, red berry, light floral, grassy meadow, touch of leather) with medium acidity and delicate structure. Sweet baking spices unfold and linger on the finish as the wine warms and opens in the glass.

The 2011 growing season started with a very wet and cool spring that caused 'bud break' to occur 20 days later than average on May 5th.  Fortunately, perfect warm weather during 'bloom' occurred over the 4th of July which allowed for an amazing fruit set.  Large cluster sizes warranted heavy cluster thinning, leaving a low amount of clusters - one cluster per shoot on average - to ripen.  Berry ripening progressed throughout the cooler summer, very little heat units. Veraison occurred on September 10th (almost three weeks behind).  The first part of September brought some warm and dry weather with highs in the 80's and 90's.  October began with cool temperatures highs in the 60's and a lot of rain.  Finally, the last week of October the weather took a turn for the better providing near perfect conditions for the rest of harvest. The cool season and long hang time allowed the grapes to develop slowly, increasing complexity and flavor profiles.  Grapes for this Pinot Noir was harvested November 4, 2011. Amen!

This rich well-balanced wine has intense and layered aromas of wild red cherry and warm baking spices, smooth tannins and a finish that is long and persistent. The 2011's are showing a bit of a brown hue, indicators of age, developing on a more 'normal' timeline than expected. Yet, still youthful and a bit awkward.   This 2011 is elegant enough to be enjoyed young, however, if you are looking for a more restrained elegant vintage, and willing to cellar for 5 years, this vintage is for YOU!
